14th Assignment

Powerful Photographs

Navy chaplain Luis Padillo gives last rites to a soldier wounded by sniper fire during a revolt in Venezuela. (Héctor Rondón Lovera)

Looking at this picture, it's harrowing. We see a young man, clinging to the chaplain with the last of his strength, as if there was more than life at risk. To him, there probably was.

In this black-and-white photograph, the strong, dark contrasts don't take away from the emotion of the picture, the focal point being the dying man's last hope of salvation, of finding peace. It's quite fitting, really, that the most lighted areas are around the subjects of this photo. It surrounds them, creating a halo-esque, frozen-in-time moment, which has been captured beautifully.

The setting itself is quite eerie. The run-down stores with their barred windows, the water on the streets which  give out a bottomless, dark feel. As if the water itself is a mirror, showcasing the true nature of the events pictured.

I can't really describe why exactly this picture stuck to my mind. There's just something there, in the way it seems as if there were only them on the scene when this photo was taken, in this undisturbed pocket of serenity and emotion amidst what could've only been chaos.

Perhaps, it's just the raw 'reality' of someone's last moments showcased before our very eyes, but this photo is undeniably powerful. At least to me.

EXT. DARK CITY, DRIVING TROUGH

*****
INT. BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS OFFICE

Professor Lambeau

Come.

They walk a bit inside the shop, stop near the big boiler and the professor knocks on it sharply to get the attention of the two men sitting across them in front of a table which is pressed against a wall filled with papers and whatnot. The desk is not littered though. One of those men is balding, middle aged and he has on a light colored vest with a white t-shirt and dark pants. He also has a mustache. He keeps a pencil behind his ear. The other man is dressed in grayish-green.

Professor Lambeau (sharply)
Excuse me? Is this the Buildings and Grounds office?

Man 1
Yeah. What can I do for you?

Professor Lambeau
I just need the name of a student who works here.

Man 1
No students work for me

Professor Lambeau (tries to reason)
Could you please check?
I have this guy who works in my building. He's about this high-

Man 1 (cuts the professor off mid sentence)
Which one is your building?

Lambeau looks back at Tom for assistance

Tom (hurriedly)
two

Professor Lambeau
Two. Building two.

Man 1 turns around on his chair, looks around the desk. Turns back.

Man 1
Look if anything was stolen, I should know about that.

Professor Lambeau
No, it's nothing like that
I just need his name.

Man 1 (annoyed)
I cant give you his name unless you have a complaint

Tom (speaks up, is peeved)
This is professor Lambeau

Man 1 (amused, mockingly)
And this is professor Hayes.

Waves his hand towards Man 2, who smiles tauntingly and nods at Man 1.

Tom looks like he wants to say something biting to Man 2, gets ready to step forward. Professor Lambeau extends his hand to calm Tom down.

Professor Lambeau
(to Tom)
Tom, please.
(turns back at Man 1, pleadingly)
This is important. Please

Professor Lambeau and Tom step closer to Mens 1 and 2 as Lambeau speaks. Man 1 turns back to his desk, searches for something, finds it and turns back at Lambeau and Tom.

Man 1
Will didn't show for work today.
(sighs)
Got this trough his P.O. You can call him.

Hands Lambeau a yellow card, which contains Wills name, address, phone number and his parole officers name. Close up of the card as the professor speaks.

Professor Lambeau
P.O?

Lambeau weighs the card in his hands, looks at Man 1.

Man 1
Yeah. Parole officer

Gives the card to Tom, who pockets it.

Professor Lambeau
Thank you

Professor Lambeau and Tom turn and leave the shop.

Man 1
(as they're leaving, to their backs)
Asshole
(laughing with Man 2)

12th Assignment

ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY

Reading is fundamental

While many people note that the amount of books they read in a year has deteriorated as they get older, many also say that the current youth reads a lot less than it's older counterparts. But does the amount or text you read really matter? Here's why I think everyone should and could read at least a couple of books every year.

Reading broadens your world-view. Somebody who has read a lot can be very knowledgeable in matters that may not include themselves. Reading gives you a way to experience different things and thus, it helps to build character and gives you ways to empathize with different kinds of people. When you start early (reading, that is), it also gives you a more active imagination, which itself leads to easier problem solving and better ways to cope with difficult situations in the future.

Reading books or articles gives us a broader vocabulary: while we are busy enjoying the narrative, our brains act as sponges, sucking in information about new, interesting phrases and little factoids. It is proven, that reading a lot is in correlation with intelligence. One of the biggest pros for me is that reading is highly enjoyable! It is very fun!

Some people say that they don't have the time or the ability to read books (they might have dyslexia), well, nowadays we have audio books so that you don't have to read the book yourself. You can do something else: cooking, working out, driving and so on, while catching up on the latest chapters of your favorite book. That is also the cure for those, who think reading is boring, because it's not. While I am aware of the fact that not everyone has the money or the space to buy books or newspapers, but most of the library services are free and there are free newspapers as well. So, in my mind, it is all about us. If you want to read, chances are, you're going to be able to read.

I think that, mostly, what scares people off from reading is the fact that there are so many stigmas attached to reading. You're either a nerd or a know-it-all if you read, or if you're at a certain age, there are only certain types of books available for you. Mostly, that is untrue. Everyone should be able to find something they enjoy in the world of literature; whether it is a certain genre, saga or the works of one author, the world of books is mostly all-inclusive.

And besides, the benefits that come from reading out-weigh the cons largely.

11th Assigment

A shared narrative

The life and times of Christopher Toph

Christopher Toph might seem like a regular run-of-the-mill troublemaker with his shaggy, shoulder-length black hair and with his ripped-jeans-leather-jacket fashion sense but he's anything but that. Sure, you don't get very far with first impressions when your fingernails are painted black but it is not without a reason; the black varnish hides the ink stains on Toph's nails from his paintings.

He is sometimes difficult to deal with but at the end of day everyone seems to like him. This one time he bought his girlfriend a rose because of this fight they had on a weekend. In my opinion, Christopher Toph is very mature and wants to make a difference in this world and show his loyalty to the people he loves.

He's brought up by his strict parents, taught to keep his room clean, treat guests well and behave himself. But that's not him. Yes, he keeps his stuff at their own place, but his flat still manages to look like a bird's nest. Papers all over the tabletops, his kitchen full of items that could be put away in the cabinets. He does view his home as clean: everything is where it should be. That pile of paperwork is supposed to be right there, waiting for him to start working on it. Those socks are waiting for tomorrow.

Christopher and Lucy share the same interest, painting. Actually that's how they met, at an art class 3 years ago, and they have been together ever since that day. They rarely fight, and when they do, it's always about who's taken the best paint brush.

Today Christopher and Lucy are going on a date. The lovers had a little argument last night, so Christopher thought he could make it up to her and take her to dinner. Christopher picked Lucy up from her house and they drove to Lucy's favorite restaurant called The Best Pizza.

But, The Best Pizza seems to be closed today, so Lucy and Christopher get in a little fight concerning what to do now. They can't decide where to go and how to spend their date, and the date starts to get a little out of hand. First the argument last night, and now this. Things aren't really looking well for them now.

Christopher thought that it might be better to break up with her but as he still loves Lucy, he can't do that. He kept thinking about a solution or an answer to end the problem. He is hoping that he can talk  to Lucy calmly. But he is struggling due to his personality.

Then Lucy came up with an idea to go to her parents house to settle this, because her father is a professional in these things. At Lucy's parents house her father solved their problems with a few tests, and after a two hour talking session they were done. The old argument wasn't bothering them anymore and they came up with an great idea to finish the night off: Going to  a movie and after that deciding together for a place to eat.

10th Assignment

Song translation

Pain,
I'm not scared of it, I can endure it, I know it
but when i look at you I'm a boy, silent.
I want to wrap you in my blankets to sleep,
so that you'd never feel cold again.

The tears in the corner of the windshield,
turn to ice just by themselves.
Fields and the shoulders of the roads fly by,
and the villages, where the people wake soon.

The sorrow goes,
doesn't ask for permission, sits next to the table
Can we look at each-others eyes?
You are,
a little girl whose waiting, scared

You're leaving me with a long, long, long yearning

The tears in the corner of the windshield,
turn to ice just by themselves.
Fields and the shoulders of the roads fly by,
and the villages, where the people wake soon.

The tears in the corner of the windshield,
turn to ice just by themselves.
Fields and the shoulders of the roads fly by,
and the villages, where the people wake soon.
I come from the dark to the morning dusk

interlude

The tears in the corner of the windshield,
turn to ice just by themselves.
Fields and the shoulders of the roads fly by,
and the villages, where the people wake soon.
I come from the dark to the morning dusk

Clocks, make us some time now,
hear our small croons.
I love you more today,
than ever before, I see that now.

The translation principles I used here are to give the words of the original. So, I would translate the original lyrics as accurately as possible, while sometimes changing the phrasing to give way to the general idea of the lyric to not sway farther away from the overall meaning.

9th Assignment

Cat got your tongue?

There were many reasons why the old mansion near the graveyard at Nowhere was off-limits. Known amongst the townees as the Dreadfort, owned by a family called the Boltons if you ask the city counsel and it's somewhat notorious reputation is the object of many local legends and scary stories.
Firstly, the house looked like no-one lived there; the windows were dirty and covered with dust, the garden hadn't seen a gardener in what seemed like a good hundred years and sometimes, in the night, there were horrifying sounds to be heard from the mansion. What didn't help was the general sort of eeriness that seemed to take over the old house and it's property; the air itself seemed to stand still and morose and even the slightest sense of fear seemed to amplify the closer to the porch you got.
Secondly, the house might've looked abandoned but it was far from it; at nights, a flickering glow can bee seen from some windows, as if the house was lit by candle- or perhaps firelight. The only living thing to be seen on the property is a black cat with eyes of molten silver and one ear which's tip is missing, who hisses at everyone trying to touch it.
Naturally the attention, or the biggest portions of it, are garnered by children or teenagers, youngsters who don't know any better than to try and dare each other to stay the night at the old property. No-one has gone further than the groundskeeper's hut that's located near the outside perimeter of the property. Legend has it that those who've tried have never returned with all of their wits about them, never speaking about the house again, afraid of even their own shadows.
Sam O'Connell, 14, is determined to show his friends that he, thank you very much, is not scared of some old house near the cemetery. No matter what Ben and Carol say, he will stay the night, the full night and near the Mansion itself; farther than anyone has ever gotten. Armed with his father's military knife, a journal and some essential camping equipment hes saying goodnight to his friends; tomorrow he'll become a legend, he can already feel it. He was right, he would become a legend but not in the way he imagined it.
The morning would come to find Sam nowhere in sight. Parents were called, police was called and still. The police entered the house forcefully after finding the boy's journal in the bushes, but little Sam was beyond saving. The police found his body in the writing room, covered in blood, the white carpet around him was stained as red as summerwine, it had drank his blood up greedily. The boy showed no signs of injury though, no wounds or anything. The baffled police found no signs of foul play, no signs of any other living being besides them and the cat with it's unblinking copper-orange eyes. The officers could've sworn they were silver before as it was undoubtedly the same cat.
Little Sam's journal is still opened in the police officer's office. The only lead they have ever managed to get on the case.
